Joined at the center by our world-class Health Sciences Library

Dr. Myron Cohen, Director of the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases and a member of the library’s Board of Visitors, gave a nice shout out to the HSL and the five UNC-CH health sciences schools in his most recent blog entry:

“I know I have said it before, but one of the things that is special about this campus is that we have schools in all five health disciplines: medicine, public health, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy. More importantly, they are all on the same campus, within walking distance, and joined at the center by our world-class Health Sciences Library.”

Read the entire blog entry to find out about the Institute’s efforts to bridge the divide between the health sciences side of campus and the rest of our university by, among other things, the introduction of a new global health discussion series, Heels in the Field.

“You are incredible! That’s perfect.”

I received this reaction to providing help via online chat to a person looking for numbers of physicians in specialties for several states, as well as total numbers of physicians. Thanks to Kate McGraw, a fellow librarian, we had the perfect source of this information — which turned out to be a print book on first floor!

“You are incredible! That’s perfect. I had spent hours doing internet searches without luck. Thank you so much!”

This compliment made my day!

People actually do say, “I love the HSL!”

When I meet someone new and introduce myself as a librarian at UNC-Chapel Hill I usually receive a positive comment on how excellent the library is. Quite often the comment is about the HSL. People actually do say, “I love the HSL!” and go on to relate how library staff were amazingly helpful. Thanks, HSL, for all your many contributions to the UNC community.

Thanks for connecting me with the information I needed

I wanted to track down an article about new research I had read about that could lead to a new treatment for the rare kidney stone condition – cystinuria – I suffer from.  I submitted a request to HSL’s “Ask a Librarian” service in the morning, and by that afternoon they responded with information on how to find the complete, published article I needed.  I take this as proof that the HSL at UNC-Chapel Hill doesn’t just say “Connecting people everywhere with knowledge to improve health” for fun.  Rather, it is statement of purpose that the HSL librarians truly live by.  Thank you for connecting me with the information I needed to (hopefully!) improve my health.

Be one of the first to Share!

Be one of the first to share your story, long or short, about why you love the HSL. Maybe you’ve had an interaction with a librarian that helped you with a paper or research.  Maybe you want to share your favorite place to study (or sleep) in the library. Perhaps you and your classmates used our study rooms to collaborate  on a successful project. Or maybe you used our conference rooms for an important meeting or class. Whatever it is, we want to hear from you – faculty, students, staff, alumni, and anyone else who uses HSL’s resources or services.  So go on…spread the love! 🙂
